I met Emma briefly at a dinner last spring. She asked me three questions before I had finished my first sentence. I remember thinking, this is someone who actually listens. David, I watched you shift your chair closer to her every time she spoke that night. You did not notice you were doing it. I do not know every chapter of your story. But I know the room feels different when you two are in it. People relax. Conversations go longer. That is not decoration. That is a real thing. Thank you for asking me to be here. I have attended many weddings in this community. Each one is different, and each one is the same. Two people stand in front of everyone they love and promise something they cannot fully understand yet. Emma and David, you will not understand it today. That is fine. Marriage reveals itself slowly. What looks like romance from the outside is mostly patience and showing up. I have one observation. When you disagree, and you will, do not try to be impressive. Be kind. Kindness is harder than wit and lasts longer. Raise your glasses to a long, quiet, good life together.

Emma, David, thank you for including me today. I sat near the back during the ceremony and watched you both forget there were rows of people behind you. For a few seconds the whole room seemed to disappear. That is the best sign I know. Marriage is not a performance, though some days it will feel like one.
